Abstract

Biodiesel is an alternative source to replace diesel fuel derived from petroleum, where the current development of biodiesel has a positive impact on the environment because it has advantages including reducing pollution, increasing engine efficiency and not containing toxins or toxins. One of the raw materials for biodiesel is vegetable oil or palm oil. There have been many studies conducted on the manufacture of biodiesel from palm oil to improve the quality of the characteristics of palm oil. Therefore, in this study, a plasma process was carried out on palm oil to achieve improved characteristics of palm oil. The purpose of this study was to study the effect of plasma ignition time on the characterization of palm oil, especially its density, viscosity, heating value, flash point, and acid compounds contained in palm oil. For this process, 150 ml of palm oil has a plasma ignition time of 1, 2, 3, and 4 minutes. The results of this study indicate that the plasma process affects the increase or change in the characteristic values of palm oil. The lowest density and viscosity values were found at the plasma ignition time of 4 minutes, namely 0.914 gr/ml and 14.337 mm2/s, respectively. For the optimal calorific value obtained from the ignition time of the plasma 4 minutes, namely 35079 kJ/kg. The flash point parameter of all samples was found to be >210˚C. In the GC-MS test for crude palm oil, there were 20 peaks or the value of the compounds in it where the highest peak was at peak 4 with an area value of 44.21%, and for palm oil with a plasma ignition time of 4 minutes, it was obtained 20 peaks or compound value, where the highest peak is at peak 4 with an area value of 42.89%.
