Abstract

The operating room is known to play a crucial role as the primary educational arena for surgical residents. This is because experience in performing surgeries is the only way to achieve the established competence of surgical specialists. In this context, the quality of surgical education depends on how effectively knowledge is transferred between consultants and surgical residents in the operating room. Therefore, internal audits are crucial to measure the quality of surgical skill learning in the operating room for guiding education policymakers to assess the processes in place. In this context, surgical theatre educational environment measure (STEEM) has proven effective as an internal audit instrument used to quantify surgical residents’ perceptions of learning quality in the operating room. Therefore, this review aimed to provide information on STEEM, including the quality as a survey instrument, interpretation methods, global usage, and practical recommendations for comprehensive interpretation.
