Abstract
The development of industrial technology, especially the manufacturing industry requires materials that have special properties that are difficult to obtain from conventional materials such as iron and aluminum. Composite is a type of alternative material that can be used to meet these needs. The advantages of composite materials compared to conventional types of materials are high tensile strength, lightweight, corrosion resistance, wear-resistance, and controllable direction of strength. This study, this study aimed to determine the effect of drilling on the thrust force of a laboratory-scale woven ramie fiber composite. The method of making composite material specimens reinforced with woven ramie by using the hand lay-up method. This weave is spun from 12S/3 type yarn which contains 100% ramie fiber. As a matrix in this composite using Epoxy Resin Bisphenol A Epichiorohydrin type and Epoxy Hardener type Polyaminoamide Resins product PT. Justus Kimiaraya. The drilling process is carried out with various machining parameters such as (1) feed rate of 0.05, 0.09, and 0.15 mm/rev, (2) spindle speeds of 88, 455, and 1500 rpm. The results showed that the number of reinforcing plies was sufficient to affect the value of the thrust force on the ramie composite drilling. The addition of the number of plies of reinforcement will increase the value of the thrust force. The maximum thrust force value was obtained on a composite of 5 plies of reinforcement, spindle speed 88 rpm, and feed rate 0.15 mm/rev with a thrust force value of 153.53 ± 3.29 N while the minimum thrust force was obtained in experimental results without reinforcing fibers against spindle speed of 1500 rpm, and feed rate of 0.05 mm/rev with a thrust force value of 29.52 ± 3.12 N. Meanwhile, if viewed from the drilling duration, the shortest drilling time was obtained in 3-plies composite drilling with a spindle speed of 1500 rpm and feed rate 0.15 mm/rev for 2.37 seconds. The longest drilling duration was found at a spindle speed of 88 rpm with a feed rate of 0.05 mm/rev which is 1 minute 40.43 seconds in a 5-plies reinforcing composite.
