Diet, lifestyle, and genetic mutations, notably KRAS, play pivotal roles in its development. Understanding the correlation between KRAS exon 2 mutations and clinicopathological aspects of CRC could offer insights for improved screening and preventive measures, potentially reducing the disease’s impact.METHODS: This observational study was performed from January to July 2023. KRAS exon 2 mutations were measured in 48 CRC patients (14 with KRAS exon 2 mutations and 34 without) using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods.RESULTS: The 48 CRC patients comprised 22 men (45.8%) and 26 women (54.2%), with an average age of 56-65 years. Ten (20.8%) had stage I CRC and eight (16.7%) had stage IV; as many as 33 (68.7%) had high-grade CRC. A significant relationship existed between age and KRAS exon 2 mutation status (P=0.045). No significant relationship existed between CRC stage and KRAS exon 2 mutation (P=3.934). A significant relationship was found between CRC histopathology grading and KRAS exon 2 mutation (P=0.046). A relationship existed between tumor location and KRAS exon 2 mutation (P=0.041). No relationship was found between blood type (A, B, AB) and KRAS exon 2 mutation (P=2.480). Of the 25 CRC tissue samples, PCR examination found KRAS exon 2 mutations in 11, as well as three positive samples among 23 rectal cancer samples.CONCLUSIONS: Significant associations existed between clinicopathological aspects and KRAS exon 2 mutation in CRC. These might be considered potential biomarkers of CRC. ## Keywords - KRAS - Colorectal cancer - Exon - Medicine - Mutation - Oncology - Internal medicine - Cancer research - Cancer - Biology - Genetics - Gene --- Sumber: Discover Unhas — RIMS Universitas Hasanuddin.
