Leprosy generally infects the extraocular tissue and anterior segment of the eye. Ocular complications in leprosy patients can cause decreased vision and blindness. This systematic review aims to assess the prevalence of various ocular manifestations in leprosy.EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: This systematic review searched for articles in PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Scopus using a combination of the main keywords “Ocular Manifestations”, “Ocular Leprosy”, “Hansen’s disease” or relevant synonyms. The references used are studies from the last 5 years and articles written in English and full text is available. The articles reviewed are concerned with the prevalence of ocular manifestations in leprosy.EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: A total of 11 articles collected showed that the majority of articles (90.91%) reported ocular manifestations in the form of cataracts in leprosy patients with incidence rates ranging from 10.0% to 67.0%. Dry eye and lagophthalmos were reported each in 63.63% of articles with incidence rates of 2.0-81.4% for dry eye and 7.6-36.9% for lagophthalmos. Pterygium was reported in 45.45% of articles with an incidence rate of 2.0-16.1% of articles. Madarosis and glaucoma were reported each in 36.36% of articles with incidence rates of 9.6-63.8% for madarosis, and 23.4-32.0% for glaucoma. Other ocular manifestations in leprosy patients have been reported in the form of uveitis, exposure keratitis, refractive errors, corneal hypoesthesia, anterior synechiae, Meibomian gland dysfunction, conjunctivitis, trichiasis and entropion.CONCLUSIONS: Most of the ocular manifestations in leprosy patients involve the anterior segment of the eye. Most articles reported ocular manifestations in the form of cataracts, followed by dry eye, lagophthalmos, pterygium, madarosis, and glaucoma. ## Keywords - Leprosy - Medicine - Lagophthalmos - Trichiasis - Dermatology - Incidence (geometry) - Keratitis - Uveitis - Ophthalmology - Glaucoma - Hypoesthesia - Surgery - Eyelid - Physics - Optics --- Sumber: Discover Unhas — RIMS Universitas Hasanuddin.
