BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the CD147 expression in the giant cell tumor of the bone (GCTB).METHODS: We classified the GCTB samples into three groups (primary, recurrent, and metastatic), based on the clinical and histopathological examination. From 43 samples, there were 29 samples of primary GCTB, 5 samples of recurrent GCTB, and 9 samples of GCTB with metastatic. The specimens were stained by immunohistochemical procedure using CD147 mouse monoclonal antibody; then, we evaluated the immunohistochemical expression of CD147 based on the stained area and color intensity.RESULTS: The results of this study were analyzed using the χ2 test and Fisher’s Exact Test, which showed a value of P=0.029 for CD147 expression in recurrence GCTB, and a value of P=0.004 for CD147 expression in GCTB with metastasis. There was a statistically significant difference level expression of CD147 between primary and recurrence groups, and there was significant difference between primary and metastatic groups (P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS: The expression of CD147 was correlated with risk of recurrence and metastatic, therefore CD147 could be an adequate marker for recurrence and metastatic potention of GCTB.
