# Waste Management Improvement Strategy for Barrang Lompo Island in Makassar City

## Abstract
Every inhabitant produces a considerable amount of waste incessantly throughout his/her lifetime, if not manage properly and timely it would overflow and contaminate the living environment. This paper aimed to investigate and analyze problems of existing waste management in Barang Lompo Island and to develop a strategy for better improvement in the future. The research was conducted from April to August 2020. Data was collected through literature study, field surveys and user interviews. The data was analyzed by using systematically descriptive comparative analysis between what is ideally expected (das Sollen) based on national standard and regulation with what is found in the island in reality (das Sein) and demand calculation. The strategy was formulated based on the management capacity, future targets, and how the existing system works. The result showed that problems of waste on the island encompass all aspects in management including the absence of public sorting system, the poor quality of temporary disposal sites, the unavailability of sea transportation services and unlawful waste burning and dumping. The proposed strategy includes encouragement of public and private participation, reopening of the local waste bank, interlinking the local sorting system to the central waste bank, the setting of common future targets, and transportation of the non-organic waste to the city mainland.
