Abstract
Abstract Pests and diseases remain major challenges in modern agriculture, causing significant yield losses and threatening food security. The widespread use of chemical pesticides raises concerns about human health and environmental sustainability. Silica (Si) has emerged as a promising alternative to enhance natural plant defense mechanisms. This article reviews various scientific studies that investigate the role of silica application in improving the resistance of cultivated plants against biotic stress. Evidence suggests that silica can strengthen cell walls, activate defense enzymes, and inhibit the development of pathogens and insect pests. The application of silica, both in conventional and nanoparticle forms, holds the potential to reduce reliance on synthetic pesticides and support more environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
