Rainfall-Induced Slope Failure in Bukit Barisan

Abstract

Abstract Shallow landslides frequently occur in the western part of South Sumatra Province. The topography of this area is highly undulating with a slope angle of more than 40°. Previous studies revealed that 60% of ground movement in this area is categorized as soil mass movement. Observation of past slope failure events shows that the most failures occurred in the early morning after heavy rainfall during the night. Thus, rainfall is assumed to be the major triggering factor for the slope failure. This paper presents the results of a study based on slope inventory data and field observation on the possible rainfall scenarios leading to slope failure events in the Bukit Barisan area which belongs to South Sumatra Province. Both field observations and numerical analyses, performed in this study, indicated that the worst scenario is the combination of long-duration low-intensity followed by high-intensity rainfall.
