Abstract
The use of quality and certified seeds is a primary factor that significantly determines the enhancement of maize productivity. However, the limited availability of quality maize seeds and their relatively high prices hinder less affluent farmers from utilizing hybrid seeds. This is attributed to the relatively high production costs, especially during the detasseling process. Therefore, male-sterile lines are needed to serve as female parents in producing hybrid maize seeds, eliminating the need for detasseling and ensuring genetic purity. This study aims to identify male sterility inducer lines as female parents for hybrid maize, comprising 17 genotypes, including 15 hybrid maize lines and 2 commercial hybrid maize varieties (P36 and Bisi-18), using a completely randomized block design (CRBD). The results indicate that male flowering age, harvest cob weight, yield, and productivity significantly correlate with sterility percentage. These findings will assist breeders in developing efficient breeding programs to establish and create genotypes with high genetic purity.
