BACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma comprises a variety of malignant neoplasms of lymphoid tissue, displaying various biological and clinical features. The R-CHOP regimen, comprising rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone, is widely employed in treatment. Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, are essential in initial treatment; however, the selection of regimen depends on the kind of lymphoma. Abnormal glucose metabolism is a significant negative effect of glucocorticoids. This study investigates changes in the glycemic profile of patients receiving R-CHOP and CHOP therapy.METHODS: This research is a prospective cohort study that is observational and analytical, conducted at the Laboratory of Hematology and the Polyclinic of Ear, Nose, Throat, Head, and Neck Surgery at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Teaching Hospital (RSP) Hasanuddin University and Army Hospital (RST) Pelamonia.RESULTS: Blood glucose levels (BGL) significantly increased in non-Hodgkin lymphoma patients postchemotherapy: 4.02 mg/dl after the first cycle, 3.05 mg/dL after the second, and 2.51 mg/dL after the third. Fasting blood sugar (FBS) shown a significant increase: 7.17 mg/dL after the first cycle, 6.51 mg/dL post the second, and 2.22 mg/dL following the third. Comparative research indicated that the most substantial increases in BGL and GDP occurred during the initial cycle, followed by a gradual decrease in subsequent cycles.CONCLUSIONS: This study noted a significant increase in BGL levels after chemotherapy during the first, second, and third cycles. The average change in BGL and GDP over chemotherapy cycles revealed that the most substantial increase in BGL and GDP levels transpired during the initial cycle, succeeded by the second cycle, while the minimal rise was noted after the third cycle of chemotherapy.
