Conductive deafness is prevalent in this population due to structural abnormalities, and various risk factors may exacerbate its severity.METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Makassar from February to August 2024 to assess the presence and severity of hearing loss in children with Down Syndrome. Diagnostic methods included tympanometry, otoacoustic emissions (OAE), pure-tone audiometry (PTA), and auditory steady-state response (ASSR). Risk factors such as gestational age, birth weight, maternal age, history of intracranial infection, jaundice, and seizures were analyzed.RESULTS: Among the participants, 45.3% exhibited normal hearing, while 54.7% had hearing impairment, including 22.6% with sensorineural deafness. The mean hearing levels were 33.41 dB (right ear) and 34.37 dB (left ear), with mild impairment (25-40 dB) in the right ear and moderate-severe impairment (55-70 dB) in the left. Significant risk factors included gestational age <39 weeks (P=0.018, OR=3.00), history of intracranial infection (P=0.007, RR=0.11), and history of jaundice (P=0.011, odds ratio = 3.00).CONCLUSIONS: Children with Down Syndrome are at high risk for hearing loss, with severity influenced by gestational age, intracranial infections, and jaundice. Early screening and intervention are crucial to managing hearing impairments in this population. ## Keywords - Medicine - Hearing loss - Conductive hearing loss - Sensorineural hearing loss - Odds ratio - Audiology - Pediatrics - Down syndrome - Audiometry - Gestational age - Population - Risk factor - Family history - Etiology - Case-control study - Jaundice - Otoacoustic emission - Medical history - Risk assessment - Epidemiology --- Sumber: Discover Unhas — RIMS Universitas Hasanuddin.
