Abstract

BACKGROUND: Acute ischemic stroke is the most common cause of disability and mortality globally. Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR) are inflammatory parameters, which can be the predictors of acute ischemic stroke with poor prognosis. However, there remain a few studies that investigated the association of NLR and LMR with the extent of ischemic damage and the severity of stroke. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the correlation between inflammatory parameters with infarct volume and severity in acute ischemic stroke patients.METHODS: This study is a retrospective study of 154 acute ischemic stroke patients admitted to Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo General Hospital, Makassar, Indonesia, from January 2023 to December 2024. Testing of the Spearman correlation collected demographics, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Score, inflammatory parameters (NLR and LMR), and infarct volume data by analyzing data.RESULTS: NLR and infarct volume correlated r=0.619, P=0.000 (P<0.05). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between NLR and NIHSS r=0.516, P=0.000 (P<0.05). LMR had a negative correlation with infarct volume r=-0.544, P=0.000 (P<0.5%), and LMR negatively correlated with NIHSS r=-0.420, P=0.000 (P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS: NLR and LMR are related to infarct volume and NIHSS. High NLR and low LMR were associated with the extent of ischemic area damage and the severity of stroke.
