It is classified as CSOM with or without cholesteatoma, with global prevalence ranging from 65 to 330 million cases. Antibiotic resistance could complicate CSOM treatment. This study examines microbial patterns and antibiotic sensitivities in CSOM patients in Makassar, aiming to guide effective, region-specific management strategies, and address rising resistance challenges.METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study assessed bacterial patterns and antibiotic sensitivity in CSOM patients at Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo General Hospital and network hospitals from July to December 2023. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS, employing descriptive statistics, frequencies, and percentages to summarize findings and evaluate categorical variables.RESULTS: Among 60 participants, bacterial cultures showed 10% no growth, 71.7% gram-negative, and 18.3% gram-positive bacteria. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common pathogen (40%), followed by Proteus mirabilis and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Antibiotic sensitivity varied, with P. aeruginosa showing the highest sensitivity to piperacillin-tazobactam and meropenem, highlighting the need for targeted treatment in CSOM.CONCLUSIONS: P. aeruginosa was the most prevalent pathogen in CSOM. Effective antibiotics included ceftazidime, piperacillin-tazobactam, amikacin, and meropenem, while resistance was noted to cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin. Tailored antibiotic therapy based on local resistance patterns is essential for effective CSOM management and combating antimicrobial resistance. ## Keywords - Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media - Medicine - Antibiotic sensitivity - Antibiotics - Antibiotic resistance - Pseudomonas aeruginosa - Perforation - Otitis - Internal medicine - Antimicrobial - Microbiology - Pathogen - Colistin - Cholesteatoma - Azithromycin - Dermatology - Middle ear - Antibiotic therapy - Microbiological culture - Surgery --- Sumber: Discover Unhas — RIMS Universitas Hasanuddin.
