Platinum-based chemotherapeutic agents, such as cisplatin, constitute a successful treatment for nasopharyngeal cancer; nonetheless, nephrotoxicity is the primary adverse effect associated with cisplatin use. Our objective was to evaluate the efficacy of N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) as an antioxidant and antinephrotoxic agent in nasopharyngeal cancer patients undergoing cisplatin chemotherapy.METHODS: This research is a prospective cohort study that is observational and analytical, done at the Ear, Nose, and Throat-Head Neck Polyclinic of Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital and Hasanuddin University Hospital in Makassar from May 2024 to August 2024.RESULTS: A notable elevation in urea levels was observed in the 6th cycle relative to other cycles, indicating that the administration of NAC influenced the measurement outcomes at the conclusion of the treatment cycle. Notwithstanding the consistently stayed within normal parameters throughout the cycle. In the 6th cycle, creatinine levels rose dramatically compared to the 4th cycle; however, there was no significant difference from the other cycles. Creatinine levels consistently stayed within normal parameters across all cycles. In treatment group II, a notable reduction in creatinine levels in cycle 4 compared to cycle 3 indicated the potential efficacy of NAC supplementation in individuals exhibiting enhanced renal function following cisplatin chemotherapy.CONCLUSIONS: The average urea levels were not substantially different in the initial treatment group administered NAC tablets at a dosage of 600 mg. ## Keywords - Nasopharyngeal carcinoma - Medicine - Cisplatin - Creatinine - Nephrotoxicity - Internal medicine - Adverse effect - Chemotherapy - Oncology - Cancer - Renal function - Gastroenterology - Urology - Renal cell carcinoma - Radiation therapy - Prospective cohort study - Biomarker - Kidney disease - Blood urea nitrogen - Carcinoma - Cohort - Antioxidant - Observational study - Basal cell - Combination chemotherapy - Surgery --- Sumber: Discover Unhas — RIMS Universitas Hasanuddin.
