Abstract

BACKGROUND: Lung diseases, including tuberculosis (TB) and lung cancer, are significant global health concerns, especially in Indonesia, which has some of the highest rates worldwide. Bronchoscopy is a key diagnostic tool for these conditions when other tests are inconclusive. To assess recovery after bronchoscopy, scoring systems like the SAMPE and modified Aldrete scores are widely used. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of the SAMPE and modified Aldrete scores in evaluating recovery times following bronchoscopy under laryngeal mask airway general anesthesia (LMA), focusing on postoperative complications, discharge readiness, and patient outcomes.METHODS: This non-randomized controlled trial was conducted at Wahidin Sudirohusodo and Hasanuddin University Hospitals with 50 bronchoscopy patients. Participants were adults over 18 without cognitive impairment, while those with significant medical conditions were excluded. The patients were divided into two groups: one evaluated using the SAMPE score and the other using the Modified Aldrete score. Post-procedure evaluations were conducted regularly, monitoring vital signs, consciousness, pain, and adverse events.RESULTS: The study found that patients assessed with the modified Aldrete score recovered faster, achieving significantly shorter Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) recovery times (11.6 vs. 15.2 minutes, P<0.001) compared to those assessed with the SAMPE score. However, 20% of the Modified Aldrete group experienced postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), while the SAMPE group reported no complications.CONCLUSIONS: The Modified Aldrete score facilitates faster PACU discharge, but the SAMPE score provides a more comprehensive evaluation, addressing nausea and pain more effectively, making it a potentially safer option for certain patients.
