Abstract
In modern process industries, the reliability of sensors, transmitters, and controllers is paramount because any failure can lead to process disruptions, safety hazards, and economic losses. Unplanned downtime can be avoided by monitoring the health of field devices through real-time communication between control systems and field devices. The integration of microprocessors into field devices has become standard industry practice and is often referred to as a smart device. The challenge of displaying a complete picture of the plant’s sensor health and drilling down to individual sensor alerts, error codes and potential remedies from hundreds of parameters with many different types and manufacturers with different measurement principles of smart instrumentation has always been a problem. To address these concerns, the NAMUR NE 107 standard provides a structured approach to device diagnostics and health monitoring, offering a standardized way to classify and communicate diagnostic information across different manufacturers and systems by classifying various diagnostic data into 4 main categories. This research will explore the practical applications of integrating real-time device diagnostics of the smart instrument on DCS system platform using HART protocol. DCS Foxboro control system automatically identifies warnings or errors that occur on the device with issues HART command 48 to read the diagnostic status bits of the smart instrument. The DCS database stores diagnostic information from smart instruments and is used by web-based application services then displayed on the web application dashboard with data requests from the DCS database. The system provides an enhanced tools for service technicians, operators, and application programmers to improve the maintenance of process equipment and increase the effectiveness of the workforce.
