BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a live birth that occurs before reaching 37 weeks of gestation. Inflammation and infection of the mother and fetus are one of the precursors for preterm labor. 8-isoprostane is considered a marker of antioxidant deficiency and oxidative stress. This study aims to determine the relationship between 8-isoprostane levels in pregnant women and preterm labor.METHODS: This study is an analytical study developed with a cross-sectional research design, the study sample was second and third trimester pregnant women with and without preterm labor. Sampling is carried out by purposive sampling. Conducted at Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital, and educational network hospitals. Data were analyzed by Chi-square Test, Mann-Whitney Test and Scatterplot.RESULTS: There were 100 people divided into 50 people with preterm labor and 50 people in the control group. The 8-isoprostane level in the preterm group had a mean serum 8-isoprostone level of 65.78±10.72 ng/mL which was higher than the 8-isoprostone level of women in aterm delivery with an average of 35.22±14.74 ng/mL. The results of the comparison test showed that there was a significant difference in the levels of 8-isoprostane between pregnant women with preterm and aterm deliveries with a value of P=0.01 (P>0.05).CONCLUSIONS: 8-isoprostane in preterm labor is higher than in aterm delivery pregnant women.
