Abstract
The applications of robotic technology, particularly in assistive robotics for medical settings have been widely and increasingly explored. Various forms are observable and one of the most common one is the robot wheelchair. This paper aims to develop assistive robotics that are capable of providing professional services to persons with disabilities and elderly, followed by designing and implementation of wheelchair robot. There are two mechanisms of interface being applied on the wheelchair, i.e. using capacitive touch and voice-based command mechanisms. The two-based interfaces are used as the gateway to communicate and to move the wheelchair prototype with two basic motions, forward and reverse motions. For experimental purposes, three scenarios are designed, which are: (1) Scenario 1: there is no participant involved sitting on the robot wheelchair (no load). The commands are given by participant by standing nearby the robot wheelchair; (2) Scenario 2: a participant with a specified weight, involved sitting and directly provides commands to the robot wheelchair; (3) Scenario 3: a participant with different weight, involved sitting on the robot wheelchair, and at the same time, providing commands. The experiment outcomes suggest that there is an impact of the load towards the performance of the wheelchair, the heavier the weight causes the speed of both wheels decrease. For applicability in health applications, the scenarios of experiments need to incorporate the medical settings in order to measure the performance of the robot wheelchair.
