Abstract

The high temperature of the ship engine heat waste has the potential to be used for converting seawater into freshwater through a distillation process. This study aims to design an optimal distillator lid based on the previously studied distillation prototype as well as to test the performance of the newly designed distillation prototype in producing freshwater. The study focused on the performance of several lid designs with different shapes and slope angles. In this study, 2 (two) forms of the distillator lids were made and tested, namely a 1-roof lid and a 2-roof lid with slope angles of 30o, 40o, and 50o. From the results of the prototype test, it was found that the lid with 2 roofs produced more freshwater than the 1 roof. Moreover, it was also found that the prototype lid with a slope angle of 50o produces more freshwater than the slope of the lid of 30o and 40o.
