Abstract

BACKGROUND: The high number of tuberculosis cases is a challenge in Indonesia. Apart from finding and managing active tuberculosis cases, an important step taken to reduce the incidence of tuberculosis is detecting latent tuberculosis Infection (LTBI). This research aimed to determine the prevalence, risk factors and effects of Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccination on LTBI in non-clinical health workers.METHODS: The research was conducted at Labuang Baji Regional Hospital (Makassar, Indonesia) between March and May 2023, using a cross-sectional method. A total of 36 subjects met the inclusion criteria, non-clinical health workers. Subjects underwent an Interferon-Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) Test to assess latent tuberculosis infection.RESULTS: Based on the research results, it was found that the prevalence of LTBI in health workers was 33.3%. Health workers who do not have a history of BCG vaccination have a 6-time risk of experiencing LTBI and this is significant (P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of LTBI in non-clinical health workers is still high. Having no history of BCG vaccination carries a significant risk of experiencing LTBI.
