Abstract
Two years after the 2018 earthquake followed by a tsunami in Donggala, dozens of families keep choosing to stay in the shelters they built using the building ruins instead of moving to the permanent houses offered by the government. This research reveals the survival spirit of nine families in reconstructing their non-permanent houses in Donggala, and why they keep staying there. This is qualitative research with a grounded theory approach in Wani 2, Donggala Regency. Data collecting were carried out through interviews and collecting initial documentation from the reconstruction assistant, as well as interviews with several residents about the post-occupancy problems experienced and collecting photos of the current state of the objects, then were analyzed using the Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) instrument which focused on the technical aspects of the dwelling and was described through a descriptive narration. The results showed that the survivors who were still in the non-permanent shelters until 2021 wanted to keep the memory of the old buildings in the new ones by utilizing the building ruins and components, while also being able to live in the shelter quickly, efficiently, strong, and safe for their lives. The POE assessments strengthen their reasons to stay; all the discomfort feeling can still be tolerated and can sufficiently reduce their trauma. These results are expected to provide an understanding of the reuse of post-earthquake building ruins and components for similar plans.
