Systemic administration of lidocaine has antinociceptive, antiarrhythmic, anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic effects. Lidocaine exerts these effects under both acute and chronic pain conditions and acute respiratory distress syndrome through mechanisms that can be independent of its primary mechanism of action, sodium channel inhibition.
