Abstract

Abstract Mount Awu has a history of tsunami generation due to its pyroclastic flows. This fact reveals that it could regenerate the tsunami in the future. Pyroclastic flows comprise dilute and dense pyroclastic density currents (PDC). Dense PDC flows are considered to have properties similar to those of landslides. Therefore, the modeling applied a similar principle to landslide-induced tsunami simulations. Simulations aimed to model the potential run-up and the run-out distance of tsunami waves generated by the dense PDC Mount Awu. The modeling applied shallow water equation using Cornell Multi-grid Coupled Tsunami Grid (COMCOT). The simulation resulted in the tsunami height reaching 0.08–4.01 meters. Further tsunami waves reach the west coast of Sangihe Besar Island and several small islands around Mt. Awu. This study provides significant benefits in disaster mitigation for those who have authority over Mount Awu and its vicinity.
