Abstract

Abstract Sugar palm ( Arenga pinnata ) is widely recognized as a plant with numerous benefits. This study aims to examine the ethnobotanical significance of sugar palm among communities residing around the Maros-Pangkep karst area. Data on local community knowledge and utilization of Arenga pinnata plant parts were collected through surveys, observations, and interviews. Data on sugar palm density in yards and gardens, as well as forest areas, were collected using a transect method. The research data were analyzed descriptively. The results indicate that sugar palm provides various benefits to local communities those living around the Maros Pangkep karst. Arenga pinnata also represents an integral part of the community’s local knowledge. However, over time, the management of this plant has declined, both in terms of the number of individuals engaged in its cultivation and the number of naturally occurring plants. Therefore, this study suggest an active participation from multiple stakeholders to support the sustainable management of this species in the future.
