Abstract

Garlic (Allium sativum) is one of the ethnomedicinal plants used by people in the tropical region. Its bulb is commonly utilized as traditional medicine for wound healing, particularly in the developing world. This study analyzed the efficacy of topical cream of garlic extract (Allium sativum) on the expression of tumor necrotic factor (TNF-α) and wound closure as the parameters of wound healing in the experimental mice using an acute wound modeling. The research design was a randomized post test control group design. The study was conducted at 4 labolatories, i.e., Biofarmaka Laboratory at the Center for Health Education Research at the Hasanuddin University for the preparation of topical cream of garlic bulb extract, Animal Laboratory of the Medicine Faculty of the Hasanuddin University for the care and treatment of the experimental mice, Histopathology Laboratory of the Research Center for Veterinary Sciences in Maros for the preparation of histopatological slides. A total of mice were 54 mice (Rattus novergicus) of wistar strain by making circular excision wound on dorsal with the diameter of 8 mm using punc byopsi. The experimental mice were divided into 3 groups that include the negative control group by treating 0.9% NaCl, the positive control group by treating 3% oxytetracycline and the treatment group by treating 10% topical cream of garlic extract. Wound tissues of mice were microscopically observed on day 3, day 7 and day 14 respectively. Results of the study proved that wound healing by using topical cream of garlic extract (Allium sativum) showed the highest effect in reducing the expression of tumor necrotic factor (TNF-α) and the lowest diameter of wound in the experimental mice compared to the control groups.
