## Abstract
The Makassar Strait is a vital marine biodiversity center. Despite regional studies, comprehensive information on spearermantis shrimp (Stomatopoda) species variation and distribution in its southern part (Maros, Pangkep, Pinrang) is notably scarce. This study addresses this gap by integrating data from fishermen’s discard catches, using varied gears: folding traps (Maros), rakkang traps (Pangkep), and gillnets (Pinrang). Morphological identification, Venn diagram for distribution, abundance, and total length recording were conducted. Analysis identified 5 spearer mantis shrimp species. Distribution was highly localized: Myakella nepa and Harpiosquilla harpax shared Maros/Pangkep - Oratosquilla fabricii unique to Pangkep - Harpiosquilla raphia and Oratosquilla oratoriaunique to Pinrang. No species occurred across all locations or uniquely in Maros. Abundance and length ranges indicated minimal intraspecific size variation. This first integrated overview of spearer mantis shrimp diversity/distribution in the southern Makassar Strait reveals highly localized patterns. These patterns suggest distinct microhabitat/environmental factors and potential gear influence, offering crucial data for benthic biodiversity and conservation.
