Abstract
The development of limestone which is very sensitive to changes in geological conditions is interesting to study in the process of diagenesis. The research area is part of the Taccipi Formation in the East Sengkang Basin was formed by the Walanae Fault system, which was followed by synorogenic deposition in the Late Neogene. This study examines the process of diagenesis in limestone in the Matampae Area, Ponre District, Bone Regency, Sulawesi, Indonesia. We use petrographic analysis to identify and classify rocks, interpret depositional environments, and determine diagenesis. Petrographic analysis has revealed that most of the limestone is classified as boundstone, packstone, wackestone, and crystalline. In addition, the diagenetic stages including micritization, cementation, dissolution, compaction, and neomorphic, were also recognized. The Taccipi Limestone diagenesis suggests a complex depositional that include several diagenetic events that concluded a variety of physical and chemical change. These alterations appear to indicate a dynamic environment that changes from marine to fresh water and from phreatic to vadose conditions over time. Phreatic marine diagenesis identified by the presence of a microbial micritization, the formation of fibrous cement, and fibrous to bladed. Furthermore, cementation of micrite into bladed calcite and minor neomorphism occur in the mixing zone. Fresh phreatic diagenesis accompanied by shell dissolution forms a mouldic which is filled with blocky and equant calcite cement. Vadose diagenesis leads to prevalence of dissolution processes and calcite sparry infilling of irregular fracture.
