Abstract
The objective of this article is to elucidate the development of the emper terbuka (implying an open veranda) in housing projects for institutions designed by Friedrich Silaban. The research was conducted utilizing a documentary approach focused on his design of open veranda space for institutional housing projects from the 1930s-1940s to 1970s through the project architectural drawing archives and photographs. The open veranda plans in these housing projects have similar characteristics to private house projects. He employed a single anterior veranda or paired it with a rear one that connected to any public area. These verandas are generally shaded by the roof-wide eaves or integrated with sunshades. In conclusion, open veranda is a realization of housing necessities for public interaction space suitable for the tropical climate.
