Correlation of immature platelet fraction and interleukin-6 in breast cancer patients with chemotherapy induced neutropenia: a cohort study

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy induced neutropenia (CIN) is a common side effect of myelosuppression in the treatment of breast cancer (BC) patients and can lead to serious complications. Exploration of the relationship between immature platelet fraction (IPF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) may help in the management of BC patients with chemotherapy induced neutropenia. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between IPF and IL-6 in BC patients with CIN.METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted with 39 female BC. Measurements of IPF and IL-6 from blood samples were taken before and after chemotherapy. CIN was characterized by an absolute neutrophil count <2000 cells/µL.RESULTS: The mean pre- and post-chemotherapy IPF values were 2.23% and 3.23%, respectively, while IL-6 levels were 63.86 pg/mL and 62.04 pg/mL, respectively. The differences in IPF and IL-6 values in this study were not statistically significant, both pre- and post-chemotherapy, between participants with and without CIN. Participants administered granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) showed a significant difference in IPF values but not in IL-6 levels. Chemotherapy affected the increase in IPF values but did not significantly impact IL-6 levels, regardless of CIN status. Administration of G-CSF did not significantly affect changes in IPF and IL-6 levels post-chemotherapy. In participants not receiving G-CSF, chemotherapy significantly increased IPF values but did not affect IL-6 levels. The correlation between IPF and IL-6 in BC participants was weakly positive and not statistically significant.CONCLUSIONS: Chemotherapy significantly increased IPF but did not cause significant changes in IL-6 levels. No correlation between IPF and IL-6 was found in this study.
