Abstract

BACKGROUND: Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) are known as an important factor in atherosclerotic disease and are a major target in primary and secondary prevention. Examination of LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) can be measured by using Friedewald Formula (FF) and direct examination. Due to Indonesia’s limited facilities FF is a preferable method compared to direct examination considering its affordability and feasibility. Therefore, we are interested to compare FF examination and direct LDL for lipid screening lipid in non-diabetic young adult subjects. the aim of this study was to determine concordance between LDL examination results and FF in non-diabetic young adult subjects.METHODS: This type of research uses a cross-sectional design, which will be carried out from January 2021 until the number of samples is met. The population of this study were all resident students at Hasanuddin University, Makassar who met the research criteria (inclusion criteria). The data were analyzed descriptively. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25.RESULTS: This research was conducted from February 2021 to March 2021, age 25-39 years, no diabetes mellitus, no history of taking corticosteroid drugs, and no history of taking cholesterol-lowering drugs. 97 subjects enroll this study. The subject’s direct LDL levels varied between 47 and 212, with an average of 136.1±35.6. FF LDL levels were found to vary between 40.6 - 203.4 with an average of 130.1 ± 34.4. There was a significant concordance between FF LDL and Direct LDL (P<0.001). Based on the Kappa value, the concordance level is 71.5%.CONCLUSIONS: In our study, we found FF have shown to be reliable and suitable for measuring LDL cholesterol in Indonesia especially in non-diabetic young adult.
