Abstract
The study aimed to analyze the impact of building environments on the thermal environments in the classrooms and the impact of thermal environments on the thermal comfort of students. Data was collected by using survey and measurement techniques inside classrooms. The study involved 782 students surveyed in 24 classrooms from four senior high schools in Makassar. Students responses on their thermal sensation and prefrence were recorded in the questionnaire. At the same time of survey, the measurement of thermal environments of each classroom were recorded by LSI-Lastem and Hobo dataloggers. The time used for undertaking survey and measurements at one classroom was 30 menits. The study found that the building environment affect the thermal environment inside classrooms. Lowest operational temperature was found in the schools with has more greening and the building density is low. Not suprisingly, the study also found that thermal environment significantly affect the response of students. Students who studying in classrooms with small operative temperature tend to have low thermal sensation votes (TSV).
