Abstract
Coastal areas have many unique activities that strengthen the economy, such as salt farming, aquaculture, seaweed, coral reefs, and fishing cultures. However, the worrying global problem of coastal areas at present is their vulnerability to disasters. One of these is coastal abrasion. This indirectly affects the economic development of the local community/population. One of the criteria for settlements is safety in any area, especially coastal areas. Settlements are the most critical areas in mitigating natural disasters. This is because the settlement is a community where people live and come together. The most significant economic losses due to disasters are generally in a settlement. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the characteristics of a settlement to determine the extent of disaster risk that may occur. The research objectives are: To analyze characteristics of the settlement and the threat of coastal hazards in terms of the economic development of residents. The study site is located in the village Ujung Lero, Pinrang Regency, South Sulawesi. The research data were obtained through surveys, direct observations, and interviews using questionnaires from fishermen groups in the coastal area of Ujung Lero. The data were analyzed in a descriptive comparative manner. The result of this study is that the resilience of coastal development in Lero village can be classified as disaster-prone. This is due to the shape of the stilt houses, which were initially protected against storms and floods and were converted into two-story houses by some inhabitants.
