Accompanying COVID-19 patient acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) demonstrated that virus-induced proinflammatory cytokines including interleukin 6 (IL-6) lead to a hyperinflammatory and procoagulable state in the late stages of the disease. The aim of this study was to assess the condition of COVID-19 patients with IL-6 as a marker.METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was taken on 111 COVID-19 patients. Patients who have a history of autoimmune, cancer, trauma, burn injury, or undergoing surgery were excluded from the study. Demographic and clinical data were collected. Interleukin 6 is measured by 6 mL plasma testing with electrochemiluminescence (ECL) Cobas® e601 (Roche Diagnostics International Ltd, Rotkreuz, Switzerland) with IL-6 Human ProQuantum Immunoassay Kit (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA). Baseline data were descriptively summarized, and the differences in each variable between groups were calculated using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whittney Tests. Interleukin 6 associated with survivability was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier Survival Curve, and outcomes were reported with 95% confidence intervals (CI).RESULTS: Survivability at 37.65 pg/mL higher IL-6 correlates with lesser survival days. IL-6 cut-off at 53.57 pg/mL with 70.7% sensitivity and 70% specificity.CONCLUSIONS: Serum IL-6 levels have a positive correlation with mortality and could be a predictor of death in COVID-19 patients. ## Keywords - Medicine - Internal medicine - ARDS - Retrospective cohort study - Proinflammatory cytokine - Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) - Gastroenterology - Immunology - Disease - Inflammation - Lung - Infectious disease (medical specialty) --- Sumber: Discover Unhas — RIMS Universitas Hasanuddin.
