Homocysteine undergoes transulphuration via cystathionin to form cysteine. The conversion of homocysteine to cystathionin is catalyzed by cystathionine ß synthase (CBS), which requires pyridoxal five phosphate (P5P) as the active form of vitamin B6 or as a cofactor. In humans, there are at least two pathways for the remethylation of homocysteine to methionine. This reaction requires folic acid and vitamin B12. This study aimed to determine the reference range for serum homocysteine levels in healthy young adults.METHODS: Data from 120 subjects consisting of 60 men and 60 women with an average age of 31 years were examined using the Enzymatic Assay method with a Cobas C311® instrument with a measurement range of 350 µmol/L.
