Abstract
Makassar is one of the metropolitan cities in Indonesia. One of the problems that is faced by the Metropolitan city is congestion. Congestion is causing many vehicles on the road to over the capacity. The vehicles are responsible for the traffic congestion occurred. This study aims to investigate the driving cycle of light vehicle, especially in the national road in Makassar where it is always huge of vehicles used to travel for activities. We defined a driving cycle as the speed of vehicles during a time period. The method was carried out into steps: determine the characteristics of the vehicle to obtain the majority of the light vehicle as the sample. The next step is driving the light vehicle and tracking the route by GPS. The last step is determining the characteristics of driving vehicles. We also declared that the driving pattern can be described through a set of parameter characteristics such as mean speed, acceleration, deceleration and idle. The result shows that the velocity, deceleration, and mode behaviour of acceleration dominate the driving cycle of light vehicle. The idle behaviour has the minor proportion due to the driving cycle. Regarding the condition, the average speed of light vehicle is below 30 km/ hour. Hence, the situation of the traffic in the road segment is categorized as the stable flow in low mean speed.
